Rebuilding and Renewing Lives through Academic & Career Training
We call it our Renewed Hope Program, and it helps each resident meet the educational and skill requirements needed to become successful employees. Through our Education Center, the Renewed Hope Program improves reading, math and computer skills so that residents can be competitive in the employment market and meet the expectations of their future employers.
We assess residents in the following areas:
- Computer literacy
- Reading skills
- Reading comprehension
- Spelling
- Math
- Memory function
- Learning style
- Writing
- Analytical skills
- Language arts
Roughly 20% of our new residents do not have a high school diploma. 90% would not pass a basic academic skill assessment. A typical new arrival tends to be at a 5th grade level in reading and math—not because they aren’t smart, but because time, trouble and lack of resources have taken these skills away.
Our staff at the Education Center creates an environment of hope and encouragement to help each student move toward the potential for which they were created.
We offer instruction on:
- Filling out applications
- Completing resumes
- Interviewing tips
- Ideal work ethic
- Overcoming barriers to employment
- Interpersonal skills
- Hygiene
- Anger management and conflict resolution
About 13-15 hours per week, for at least six months to a year, students learn, study and improve their education and skills to reach levels expected of today’s workforce.
The Education Center Offers:
- 12 computers used for research, testing, word processing, and other computer training
- Private tutor rooms designed for the resident and instructor
- Large work space for projects and research
- Hope for the future through instruction and education
Results
Our learning skills improvement module increases the resident’s memory scores about 29% in the six months that they are in the education center. Their average math level is raised from 5th grade to 7th grade.
